Ellen C. Schlitzer

Ellen Catherine Schlitzer, 94, of Pottsville passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Schuylkill Center Genesis, Pottsville.

Born July 19, 1921, Pottsville, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Catherine Bergen Horan.

Ellen was a 1939 graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School. She was a Registered Nurse, a graduate of Misericordia School of Nursing, Philadelphia.

Ellen as a nurse worked at Good Samaritan, Pottsville and Warne Clinic Hospitals.

She married the love of her life, Dr. William H. Schlitzer, on her birthday, July 19, 1948.

Ellen was an excellent cook, preparing a home made meal nightly for her family of ten. She also loved to read and was a past member of the Pottsville Library Page- Turners.  Ellen enjoyed swimming and she loved to tell stories about her swimming instructor days at Camp Chickagami at Sweet Arrow Lake.  She loved spending time at the Jersey Shore.

Ellen was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, Pottsville and a past member of the Catholic Women’s Union.  She was also a Life Member of the Schuylkill Health Auxiliary. 

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William H. Schlitzer on March 8, 2000 and a sister Joan Durand, July 5, 2011.

She is survived by 8 children Mary, wife of Edward Hauck, Pottsville; William husband of Sally, Pottsville; Joseph, husband of Nancy, Pottsville; Dr. Daniel, husband of Jennifer, Mattapoisett, Mass.; Henry, husband of Lisa, Pottsville;  Kathryn, Pottsville; Christian, husband of Toni, Reading; Frederick, husband of Mary, Cold Springs, NY; 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by a brother USN Capt. (Ret.) Daniel J. Horan and his wife Helen Ann, Lawrenceville, GA; and a brother in law, Thomas Durand, Arlington Heights, Ill.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday March 16 at 11 AM at St. John the Baptist RC Church, Pottsville, Rev. David Loeper, officiating.   Family and friends are invited to pay their respects Wednesday morning from 9AM until 11AM at the church.  Private interment will be held in St. John the Baptist RC Cemetery.     Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral 515 West Market Street Pottsville has been entrusted with arrangements.  

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to St. John the Baptist RC Church 10th and Mahantongo Streets, Pottsville, PA 17901 or The Pottsville Free Public Library, 215 W Market St, Pottsville, PA 17901.
