Gurney R. Miller

July 5, 1930 ~ April 6, 2015 (age 84) 84 Years Old


Gurney Robert Miller, 84, of Pottsville went to his Eternal Rest on the morning of April 6 at Schuylkill Medical Center- East with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Pottsville on July 5, 1930 to the late William and Rita (Gavin) Miller. He attended the Pottsville schools and graduated from Pottsville High School in 1948.

Gurney was married to the former Marian (Hurst) Miller in 1958 and they had two children, Elaine married to Greg Hafer, and Gurney Rodger.

Gurney served his country during the Korean War with the rank of Sgt. He is a fifty-year member of the American Legion, Robert B. Woodbury Post #67.

Gurney and his brother, Jack O. Miller, started a tile and floor covering business in 1950 known as Miller Tile, which he worked at until retirement. He was a well-known and respected business person.

He was an active member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Pottsville where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for 10 years, and on the Administrative Board as President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Trustee.

Gurney was a devoted mason where he served over 50 years in the following bodies: Member and past Worshipful master in Tall Cedars of Lebanon where he served as Treasurer, and Bloomsburg Consistory. He was also a member of Mountain City Royal Arch Chapter No. 196, Regal Council #65 R.&S.M.M., Red Cross of Constantine, Knights of the York Cross of Honor, the Builder’s Club, and he is past president of the Pulaski Realty Co.

Gurney enjoyed working in the building trade until his retirement in 1992, He and his wife, Marian, then enjoyed going to their Florida home in Tropicana Park, Ft. Myers, FL., where he became an avid shuffler on the shuffleboard team. He loved his family and grandchildren, who referred to him as “Pappy”.  

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, Jack O. Miller and a sister-in-law, Joyce Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; two children, Elaine Hafer and Gurney Miller; four grandchildren, Jade and Luke Lynch, Mariah and Hannah Miller, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Friday April 10 at 11 a.m. Evangelical United Methodist Church of Pottsville, 305 S. Center St., Pottsville with Pastor Joseph Murton officiating. Family and friends may call Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, 515 W. Market St., Pottsville and Friday morning 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. A Masonic Service will be held Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Interment will be held at Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 305 S. Center St., Pottsville, PA 17901
