IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward
Dutton
January 15, 1948 – March 8, 2025
Edward J. Dutton, 77, of Riva, MD, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025 in Annapolis, MD.
Ed, affectionately called Papa by his family, was born in New York on January 15, 1948, to the late Edward Dutton and Alice Appleby. He was raised in Pottsville, by his aunt and uncle, Russell and Elizabeth Zimmerman. Not long before his death, he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Bernadette (Koury) Dutton.
He was a 1965 Graduate of Nativity BVM High School, where he played basketball. He was a proud graduate of Penn State University, Class of 1969 and obtained his masters degree in education from East Tennessee State University in 1972.
After briefly teaching English and coaching basketball at Nativity BVM High School, he spent most of his professional career (over 30 years) with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, where he specialized in helping inner city PA schools secure funding for math and science.
In 2010, the Duttons moved to Annapolis, MD, to be closer to their family. Ed, a lifelong coach and educa- tor, spent the past 15 years working as a substitute teacher in the Annapolis area. He spent most of his time at Broadneck High School, where his son-in-law, John Williams, has been a longtime coach and teacher, and at South River High School, where his granddaughter is a fresh- man this year.
He enjoyed watching his grandsons play sports, and his granddaughter dance. There was nothing he loved more than the company of his family, especially on a college football Saturday watching games with a cold bottle of Coke.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette; his sister, Jessie Gilger, wife of Michael Gilger of Punta Gorda FL; son, John, husband of Heather Dutton, of Annapolis, MD; daughter, Jessie Williams, wife of John Williams of Annapolis, MD; his grandchildren, John Edward Dutton Jr., Benjamin David Dutton, William Andrew Dutton, Noelia Lin Williams, and J. Christian Williams; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister Diana Giles.
Religious funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5th at Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, 515 West Market Street, Pottsville, followed by a burial at Charles Baber Cemetery. Visitation begins at 9 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made in Ed's name to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Memorial Fund.
