Obituary

Francis W. Brown "Toot" "Brownie", 90, of Port Carbon, formerly of "Jalappa" section of Pottsville, died Wednesday May 1, 2014 at Moravian Manor, Lititz, PA.

Born March 24, 1924, he was the son of the late John and Elsie (Price) Brown.
Francis was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Port Carbon where he served as the President of the Methodist Men's Club for many years. He was also a member of the Port Carbon Senior Citizens and Janet Eich Public Library, Port Carbon.

Francis proudly served in the United States Navy. He was awarded the ALNAV 76-46, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and (WWII) Victory Medal. He was a member of local veteran groups including the Navy Club of Black Diamond, Ship No. 257, of Minersville, Disabled veterans, and AP115- General George M. Randall. After serving in the Navy he was a tool and die repairman at Alcoa in Cressona, PA. He was also the owner and part-time barber at a shop attached to the family home.

He was captain of the 1942 Pottsville High School football team and a backfield star. He received the coveted "outstanding athlete" plaque from the Lions Club for his all-around ability, spirit, and conduct.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Carolyn E. (Hall) Brown, brothers, John and Harold M. Brown, sister, Elsie Boardman, and nephew, Harold L. Brown.

Francis is survived by his sons, Edward Francis Brown and his wife Maryann, Philip Charles Brown, daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Davis and husband Jeffrey, Cynthia "Cindy" Rice and husband Rev. Ronald Rice, grandchildren, Laura Brown, Andrew Brown, Sarah Brown, Melissa Sedor, Christopher Brown, Brian Mack, great grandchildren, Ella Sedor, Anthony Sedor, Anesa Brown, Gavin Brown, sister-in-law, Joyce Brown, and niece, Pollyanne Bonning.

Funeral Services will be Monday, May 5, 2014 at 11 o'clock at Schuylkill Memorial Park Chapel, Schuylkill Haven. Francis' son-in-law, Rev. Ronald Rice will be officiating. Family and friends may visit at Schuylkill Memorial Park Chapel, Schuylkill Haven from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 211 Washington St., Port Carbon, PA 17965 or Janet Eich Public Library, 111 Pike St, Port Carbon, PA 17965.
