William "Bill" J. Flynn III, 87, of Pottsville, died Monday morning at Schuylkill Medical Center East Norwegian, Pottsville.
Born August 29, 1927 in Gary Indiana, he was the son of the late William J. Flynn, Jr. and Catherine (Wiltzius) Flynn.
He was a 1945 Graduate of Horace Mann High School, Gary Indiana; 1951 Graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines.
Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he accepted a position as an engineer with Gary Steel Mills and then Gary Slag Corporation. Mr. Flynn's true passion in life was coaching and educating. These led to him accepting a position at Pottsville Area High School. He influenced many students and players during his 30-plus year career as an algebra and trigonometry instructor and head football coach. He coached Pottsville to 14 winning seasons from 1967-1982. During his entire career, he coached a total of 32 years at five different high schools in El Paso, Texas; Dallas, Texas; and the Chicago Catholic League winning their first league title.
Mr. Flynn was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville; an inducted member of the Allen-Rogowicz Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame; the Schuylkill County Football Hall of Fame; the Pottsville High Hall of Fame; and the prestigious Monogram Club of the University of Notre Dame.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three sisters.
He is survived by the love of his life, Marie (Sammy), Pottsville, to whom he would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on December 26. He is also survived by sons, William J. Flynn IV and his wife Christine, Burke VA; Michael T. Flynn and his wife Therese, Lebanon NJ; and Thomas E. Flynn, Pottsville; and daughters Kathryn M. Igoe and her husband William, Chicago Ill.; Elizabeth S. Cardia and her husband Roy, Cape Cod MA; and Martha L. Erf and her husband Eric, Chicago Ill. He is also survived by brothers David Flynn, SC and Jerry Flynn, Ind.; sisters, Suzanne Whitehead, SC; MaryLou Casey, Ill. and Barbara Green, AZ; 11 grandchildren and one great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday November 10 at 11AM at St. John the Baptist RC Church, Pottsville, with the Rev. David J. Loeper officiating. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects Sunday evening from 6 to 9 PM at St. John the Baptist RC Church and again Monday from 9 AM until time of service. Interment with Military Honors will be held at St. John the Baptist RC Cemetery. Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home 515 West Market Street Pottsville, PA 17901 has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
Mr. Flynn took great joy in helping those who were less fortunate and in honor of his generosity and in lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to Servants to All PO Box 1354 Pottsville, PA 17901.
